The first red wine to be released from the elegant and expressive 2007 vintage, our Sangiovese is lithe and playful. Four rows of vines planted on South-facing slopes are meticulously managed by leaf pulling and fruit thinning, ripening a tiny crop of grapes that produces our most limited-production wine. The aromatic fruit profile includes red plums, raspberries and cranberries enhanced by subtle notes of rum raisin and hard candy. The blend is simple, with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from our Carolyn's block added to bring richness to the mid-palate and provide the structure to balance the wine's natural acidity.

Wine AdvocateAside from Jonata in the Santa Barbara area, and a few other wineries, few estates make Sangiovese as interesting as Pride Mountain. There is not much of it, and it is always bottled in a 500 ml, but their 2007 Sangiovese is another winner. Beautiful aromas of cedar, strawberry jam, black currants, tobacco leaf, and forest floor are followed by a spicy, deep ruby/plum/purple-colored wine with medium to full body, lots of fruit, good acidity, and a sexy, complex personality. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.

Wine EnthusiastOne of the best Sangiovese out there, mainly due to the ripe balance. Avoids the unripeness or excessive ripeness that can mar this variety in California. Shows lovely, rich black cherry, raspberry and cocoa flavors, enhanced with sweet oak. The next step is to elevate this wine to complex greatness, especially at this price.

Wine SpectatorAromas blend tart cherry and ripe plum flavors in this modestly structured red. Lush and zesty, with hints of herb and licorice. Drink now through 2014.
