Here we have the finest area of the Santenot appellation, in former days classified as 'tête de cuvée', (the very best of that wine), by Doctor Lavalle. Several parcels bought in sucession by Jules Lafon (great grandfather of Dominique and founder of the Estate), 3.8 ha of vines in total. Facing east, on shallow, red, heavy clay soil, above a subsoil of hard limestone, a very sunny spot and very early to ripen. The average age of the vines is over 30, the oldest are 60 and the youngest just 3. The wines are deep in colour, rich, deep tannins are present ,but lovely and elegant on the end of the palate. Black fruit aromas dominate: blackberry, blackcurrant and cherry. More powerful than most of the Volnays, it is a wine to keep for a long time (10 to 20 years).

Wine AdvocateTasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Volnay 1er Cru Santenots du Milieu showed just a touch of reduction, but otherwise there is appreciable blackberry and briary fruit here, tertiary/woodland scents with just a splash of balsamic. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, good backbone, more backward than its peers and probably befitting another 12 months in bottle. Broody perhaps? Yet there is appreciable balance and its sturdiness will soften with time.
