Domaine de Courcel Pommard Grand Clos des Epenots 2012

Domaine de Courcel Pommard Grand Clos des Epenots 2012

SKU 10648

Le Grand Clos des Epenots is a monopoly of the Domaine. The plot of 4.89 hectares of land is located north of Pommard, at the start of the slope and is east facing. The soil, which is rich in clay and limestone, is brown and strewn with limestone rocks. The depth of the soil is around 40-60cm and its structure acts as a natural filter. The vines are ~60 years old and produce wines with aromas of red berries and also ripe white fruits such as peaches or apricots. The fine tannins are numerous and blend in nicely with the smoothness and the aromas. To be served at 15°C.

Wine SpectatorRich and open-knit, offering cherry, chocolate, carob, sandalwood and green olive aromas and flavors. The tannins are severe now, yet this has enough sweet fruit for balance. Firm finish. Best from 2018 through 2030. 250 cases imported.

Wine AdvocateTasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Pommard 1er Cru Grand Clos des Epenots has one of the superior set of aromatics for this flight with well defined, mineral-driven black cherry and raspberry fruit, just a touch of undergrowth in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, the trademark Pommard backbone and austerity, just a slight bitterness towards the finish, but remaining true to what Pommard ought to be. I suspect this will age with some style and warrant a higher score.
